FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

If you have received a service disconnection notice or have difficulty paying your bills, there are various relief programs that offer financial assistance based on your province.

For our Ontario customers

1. Low-Income Energy Assistance Program (LEAP)

If you are facing service disconnection for your electricity or natural gas bill, you may qualify to receive emergency financial assistance from the Ontario Energy Board’s Low-income Energy Assistance Program (LEAP).

Check Your Eligibility
LEAP eligibility varies based on household size and combined annual household income after taxes.

Customers who meet income eligibility requirements can receive up to $650 in emergency assistance for their electricity bills ($780 if their home is heated electrically) and $650 for natural gas bills.

*LEAP eligibility is determined by an intake social service agency. Criteria for LEAP EFA, including income and household size thresholds, are established by the Ontario Energy Board (OEB). If an applicant does not meet the income eligibility threshold or the screening guidelines, the agency may exercise discretion in exceptional circumstances and approve the applicant.

More eligibility information is available at Low-income Energy Assistance Program | Ontario Energy Board.

Starting Your Application
To apply for LEAP, you will need to contact your nearest social service agency to assess your eligibility.

  1. Visit LEAP Agencies | Ontario Energy Board and contact your local social services agency
  2. If deemed eligible for financial assistance, you may be required to visit their office for an interview
  3. Once an interview date is confirmed, gather the required documents:

    • Government-issued identification
    • Current electricity and/or gas bills
    • Copy of a rental receipt, lease, or mortgage document
    • Proof of household income (cheque stub, employment letter, income tax return)
    • Copy of your most recent bank statement

Reviewing the Application
While the intake agency reviews your application, Metergy Solutions will pause any further disconnection or collections activity on your account until a decision is made.

Please note: If you are approved, grants will be paid directly to Metergy Solutions – you will not receive a cheque.

For more information, email the Ontario Energy Board at publicinformation@oeb.ca or call 416-314-2455.

2. Ontario Electricity Support Program (OESP)

The Ontario Electricity Support Program (OESP) offers eligible low-income customers a fixed monthly credit on their electricity bills. The credit amount varies based on household size and total after-tax income.

Check Your Eligibility
The charts below show the monthly credits available based on household income. If your home is electrically heated, or you rely on an approved medical device requiring a lot of electricity, the OESP may consider your household “energy intensive” and offer a higher level of assistance. To find out if you qualify, visit ontarioelectricitysupport.ca/SelfAssessment.

* Eligibility criteria for the OESP, including household income thresholds and the credit amounts are established by the Ontario government through Regulation. Income from the Child Tax Benefit, Universal Child Care Benefit, Ontario Child Benefit, Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP), the Canada Disability Benefit (CDB), and the Registered Disability Savings Plan is not included when calculating household income for the purpose of assessing income eligibility for the OESP.
